Horticulture Kissan Mela a boon for Poonch farmers
Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Dec. 31 (ANI): The Department of Horticulture in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district recently organised a Horticulture Kissan Mela to inform farmers about the latest trends in horticulture production. Horticulture is the art of garden cultivation and its management. The programme witnessed participation of a large number of farmers from different parts of the district. The event focused on imparting knowledge about horticulture, specifically on the production of pika nut, walnut, apple, citrus and other related fruits. District Development Commissioner of Poonch Mohammad Haroon Malik said it is important to ensure that farmers make themselves familiar with modern horticulture technologies to get the best yield from their produce. "We want to make people aware about the technological advancements as also about hybrid varieties which can be produced through this medium," he said. "We were told about the cultivation of walnuts, apples, which are pre-dominantly grown in Kashmir. It helped us in getting more information on these fruits. We will impart the same to others," said a participating farmer. The farmers expressed their gratitude to the department for introducing them to new techniques and methods. (ANI)
