Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], Nov.15 (ANI): The four-day autumn Cherry Blossom festival has kicked off in Meghalaya capital Shillong. The festival is aimed at attracting tourists to the hill state in autumn to witness the unique beauty of pink and white cherry blossoms as well as Meghalaya's traditional arts, culture and cuisine. The event is organised by the Government of Meghalaya and the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), a national institute of the Department of Biotechnology. Chief Minister Mukul Sangama said, "Today, as we celebrate this first cherry blossom festival, the first edition, five years from now, I am sure we will need bigger and bigger place, this is not going to be a place where we will be hosting this cherry blossom festival five years from now. And the kind of buzz this festival will create will be something else." Popularly known as the Sakura Festival in Japan, the event is held in April every year.
