Cash crunch: No respite for Jammu residents even after a month
Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Dec. 10 (ANI): Demonetisation of high value currency has completed a month and there seems to be no respite for people residing in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district. With only currency notes of Rs.2000 available, people are having a hard time managing their day-to-day expenditures. People can be found standing in front of ATMs waiting to withdraw money from their accounts. One of them, Mohammad Shafi, said, "Since a month, we have been facing this. We have to stand in queues. It becomes more problematic for the old, women and the handicapped." "I am in dire need of money and unable to withdraw cash which belongs to me," he added. Mohammad Ameen said, "Even after standing in queue for six to seven hours, the money we get is only Rs. 2000." Narrating his experience of how difficult it is to get Rs. 2000 change, he said, "In a market, if you ask for change, people offer Rs. 1800 in exchange of Rs. 2000. Otherwise, they ask us to buy stuff amounting to Rs.500 and then give change," he added. So, it's not easy for people out there, who are still perplexed by the impromptu decision of the government to demonetise. The announcement has received mixed responses, varying from people readily supporting the decision to those demanding a roll-back. We just wish, the objective of government is fast attained and normalcy is restored at the earliest. (ANI)
