Will protect interest of people of Assam, don’t believe rumours: PM Modi on Citizenship Bill

Amingaon (Assam) [India], Feb 9 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday assured that rights of people of Assam will remain protected at all cost, while speaking about Citizenship (Amendment) Bill at a public rally here.
“Stop playing with emotions of the people of Assam for political gain and vote bank. I will fight against them. Assam will have to be saved. Since partition, the minority communities were betrayed. It is the responsibility of India to give them shelter. I assure the people of the North East that your state will not be harmed through Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.”
Speaking on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Assam Accord, the Prime Minister said: “We have done chitmahal agreement and are working towards completely sealing India-Bangladesh border. The NRC which was not being implemented earlier, now our government is working under the supervision of the Supreme Court to implement it. We want to free the country from the infiltrators. It reflects in our stringent actions against them.”
“BJP and NDA government are committed to protecting the rights and traditions of Assam and the North-East. It is our attempt to implement clause 6 of Assam Accord as soon as possible and we have already formed a committee for the same. I am here to ensure that your 36-year-old demand for implementing the Assam Accord sees the light of the day,” said PM Modi.
Clause 6 of the 1985 Assam Accord looks at giving constitutional safeguards to indigenous Assamese people against alleged illegal migrants from Bangladesh.
He also recalled the contribution of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika and attacked the Opposition for the delay in giving him Bharat Ratna.
“He was devoted to towards the cause of less fortunate and underprivileged. There was a delay of decades in recognising his great value. It would have been a matter of great happiness if he was alive and had taken this honour with his hands. It is up to you now to decide as to who is responsible for this delay?”
In a veiled attack at Congress, he added: “Bharat Ratna used to be reserved for some people the moment they were born, it used to take decades to honour people who spent their lives to bring honour to the nation. I feel proud that during BJP government we got a chance to give Bharat Ratna to Gopinath Bordoloi and Bhupen Hazarika”.
“In the recent budget, we increased the budget by more than 21 per cent for the North East. This shows our commitment to the North East. In the last four-and-half years, projects worth Rs 14,000 crore have been completed in the oil and gas sector alone in Assam,” he further added.
Attacking the Opposition, he said: “Those who indulged in scams and fled the country are being brought back and handed over to law enforcement agencies. The whole country is watching how awareness of the guard has infuriated the corrupt and every day they are using different slurs for Modi. There is a competition going on as to who could abuse Modi the maximum.”
Keeping with the tradition, Prime Minister Modi also spoke few lines in Assamese language during his address, much to the joy and cheers of the crowd.
 His speech was repeatedly interrupted by loud chanting of his name by the excited crowd.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of North East Gas Grid and City Gas Distribution Networks in Kamrup, Cacher, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts. Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated LPG Capacity Augmentation of Mounted Storage Vessel in North Guwahati.
He also inaugurated Hollong Modular Gas processing Plant in Tinsukia and laid the foundation stone of NRL Bio-Refinery at Numaligarh and also of a 729-kilometer gas pipeline from Barauni-Guwahati passing through Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim and Assam. (ANI)
