Patna (Bihar) [India], July 22 (ANI): Speculation over the next Vice President has already started following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar, with certain Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Bihar welcoming the possibility of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar being considered for the post.
Bihar Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Prem Kumar said that while the party will decide on Dhankar's successor, he would be quite happy if someone from Bihar is chosen for the post.
"The party decides this. Whoever becomes the VP will be on them. I will be happy if someone from Bihar becomes the Vice President," the minister told reporters in Patna.
Meanwhile, another state minister and BJP leader, Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu echoed a similar sentiment, dismissing anyone who calls into question the contributions of the Bihar CM.
"It is a good thing. If he (Nitish Kumar) becomes (Vice President), then what is the problem with this? Everyone is doing their work," said the minister.
The sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar has been questioned by multiple opposition leaders, including Congress' Jairam Ramesh, as he alleged that the reason for the "sudden" resignation might be political, rather than the cited health reasons.
Claiming that there are "far deeper reasons" behind the resignation, Ramesh posted on X, ""Now in a truly unprecedented move, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar has resigned. He has given health reasons for doing so. Those should be respected. But it is also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation."
"Shri Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation speaks highly of him. It also speaks poorly of those who had got him elected as Vice President in the first instance," the Congress leader added.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday "to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice." Dhankar, also the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, sent his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Acting Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh formally announced (ANI)
