Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 18 (ANI): BJP leader CR Kesavan on Monday lashed out at Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, questioning his refusal to file an affidavit under oath to substantiate his allegations and claims against the Election Commission.
Reacting to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar's remarks on the matter, Kesavan said Rahul Gandhi was indulging in "cheap drama and theatrics" instead of following due legal process.
Speaking to ANI, Kesavan said, "The persistent doubt and nagging suspicion in our people's minds is why Rahul Gandhi dodges and why he runs away from filing an affidavit under oath to substantiate his claims and allegations, because that is the established procedure of the law of the land. The people are also questioning Rahul Gandhi as to why he is indulging in such cheap drama and theatrics instead of walking the talk..."
He further added, "Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi may be above the constitution of the Congress party, but they have to obey the law of the land and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's constitution..."
Kesavan drew historical parallels, recalling instances involving Rahul Gandhi's grandmother (Indira Gandhi) and father (Rajiv Gandhi).
"In 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was convicted of election fraud. In 1989, during Rajiv Gandhi's tenure as Prime Minister, international papers reported that elections in his constituency, Amethi, were rigged, with 97 booths re-polled. This is the history," he remarked.
The BJP leader asserted that refusal to file the affidavit would expose Rahul Gandhi's "bankruptcy" and "lack of honesty and integrity." He added, "If Rahul refuses to sign the affidavit, then he has to apologise for misleading and cheating the country."
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday refuted all the recent "vote theft" claims made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on the Election Commission of India (ECI) while addressing a press conference in the national capital.
He termed allegations of bias by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabhas an "insult" to the Constitution of India. CEC also asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to either furnish a signed affidavit or apologise to the nation for his remarks.
"An affidavit will have to be given, or an apology should be made to the country. Teesra koi vikalp nahi (There is no third option.) If the affidavit is not received within seven days, it means that all these allegations are baseless." CEC Gyanesh Kumar said while addressing mediapersons.
Rahul Gandhi hit back at the CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the ECI is asking for an affidavit from him but doesn't from BJP MP Anurag Thakur when he makes the same allegations.
"The Election Commission asks for an affidavit from me. But when Anurag Thakur says the same thing that I am saying, it does not ask for an affidavit from him," Rahul Gandhi said. (ANI)
