"Why have symbolic meetings if you don't care?": Gaurav Gogoi slams Centre for not discussing SIR in Parliament

"For the second day in a row, the ruling party, the BJP, refuses to list the most important issue for opposition political parties on the agenda for parliamentary business today. Why is the BJP taking the Parliament for granted?" the Congress MP posted on X.

New Delhi [India], December 2 (ANI): Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi took on the Centre on Tuesday for "taking parliament for granted," claiming that the government is claiming important issues while the Opposition MPs repeatedly demand a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
"For the second day in a row, the ruling party, the BJP, refuses to list the most important issue for opposition political parties on the agenda for parliamentary business today. Why is the BJP taking the Parliament for granted?" the Congress MP posted on X.
He further claimed that the government only calls for "symbolic" meetings where they pretend to care about issues, but refuse to list the same issues on the Parliament's agenda.
"Why have symbolic meetings before the Parliament session where you pretend to care about the concerns of political parties when you don't even mention it in the day-to-day agenda?" Gaurav Gogoi asked.
He further criticised the winter session being one of the shortest for the legislature, claiming that this is a way to "seed chaos" in Parliament.
"This is one of the shortest Winter sessions with only 15 working days. Is the BJP deliberately seeding chaos in India's parliament?" he asked.
Meanwhile, Jhakrhand Mukti Morcha MP Mahua Maji said that the INDIA bloc has warned of a possible "chaotic session" if the government does not agree to discuss the SIR.
"Yesterday morning, there was a meeting of opposition leaders, where it was decided that we would ask for a discussion on the SIR. There should be a debate, a discussion on it. If they don't agree, then we will oppose it. Since the ruling party didn't agree to discuss it yesterday, it's possible that in today's meeting, we will decide that if they don't give a date for the debate, then today's session will be chaotic," the JMM MP told ANI.
Multiple Congress MPs have moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha demanding the immediate suspension of the allegedly "unplanned and rushed" Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, while also flagging the extreme pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) that has reportedly led to multiple deaths.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion seeking discussion on a "definite matter of urgent importance." Party MPs Vijay Kumar and KC Venugopal also moved a motion seeking a discussion on the issue.
Opposition MPs are expected to continue their protest against the SIR as the Winter Session of Parliament enters its second day. On the first day, repeated adjournments occurred due to sloganeering and protests by the Opposition benches.
The INDIA bloc MPs are scheduled to stage a protest outside the Makar Dwar of Parliament at 10:30 am ahead of proceedings. (ANI)
