We should alleviate problems of women of other religions too: Sharad Yadav on 'triple talaq' issue
New Delhi [India], Feb. 7 (ANI): A day after Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad's comments on triple talaq made headlines in the backdrop of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) leader Sharad Yadav slammed the concept of trying to improve the life of only Muslim women, saying there are women of other religions as well who are suffering in equal measure. "This is a statement that's confined within one view. There are women belonging to every strata of society who are facing problems. That should also be discussed. This question is being raised because it's the time of assembly polls in the state. But, there are problems in every religion and they can be sorted out only by taking everybody in confidence and according to the constitution of the country," Yadav told ANI. "Why are we only talking about amendments in one religion? We should talk about bringing positive changes in every religion that's plagued with issues," he added. The opposition has accused the Law Minister of playing up the issue to influence voting in Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court is currently hearing several petitions on triple talaq. Several political personalities, including Smriti Irani, have also shown their support for the removal of the anti-constitutional tradition. (ANI)
