Pune (Maharashtra) [India], February 11 (ANI): After the Election Commission of India granted the Ajit Pawar camp the party's name and symbol, Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that the decision is quite shocking and they have taken this entire matter to the Supreme Court.
"The work and thoughts done by you are important for the people. The symbol is valid only for some time, the decision of the Election Commission in this matter is quite shocking. Our symbol has been taken, and our entire party has been given to others. Snatching the party from the hands of the one who established it and giving it to someone else has never happened to date; the Election Commission has done such a thing. I believe that people will never support these things. We have taken this entire matter to the Supreme Court. We hope that a decision will be taken in this matter soon," he said.
"We have not yet made any demand regarding the banyan tree symbol. The Election Commission has sent us a letter. In this matter, we will ask for their time on Monday or Tuesday and will discuss among ourselves within the party and decide the future strategy," Sharad Pawar added.
Giving its decision on Tuesday, the Election Commission provided the Sharad Pawar faction with a one-time option to claim a name to its new political formation and provide three preferences to the Commission. The faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was the petitioner in the case. Former union minister Sharad Pawar, who founded the NCP, is the uncle of Ajit Pawar.
Hailing the decision by the ECI, Ajit Pawar said, "The matter was before the Election Commission. A separate matter is also before the Assembly Speaker. That matter has also been heard and we hope that we will have the result soon. I welcome the Election Commission's decision. We accept this decision humbly. We are very happy and we thank them."
