WB CID freezes accounts of three top GJM leaders
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], Jul 20 (ANI): Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday froze the bank accounts of top three leaders of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) to trace their source of funds. The GJM leaders whose accounts have been frozen include Morcha's president Bimal Gurung, Roshan Giri and Binay Tamang. The investigative agency acted upon a complaint filed by Sumojit Rai at Sadar Police Station in Darjeeling. The case was later handed over to the CID. Tamang had Rs. 5, 40, 000, Gurung Rs. 10, 58, 000, and Giri Rs. 9, 47, 000 in their bank accounts as on July 1. Earlier today, the GJM Yuva Morcha announced that it will go on an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow (June 21). The shutdown in Darjeeling for a separate state on Thursday entered the 36th day. Speaking to ANI, Gurung said, "The party's decision is to go for fast unto death to push for the demand of Gorkhaland. So, GJM Yuva Morcha will go on an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow". Earlier in the week, a police vehicle was set on fire by unknown assailants, amid the ongoing unrest in Darjeeling. The incident happened during the GJM's protest rally. Darjeeling is witnessing unrest since June 12 when the GJM announced an indefinite strike to protest against the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to make Bengali compulsory for all schools in the state. The protestors are asking for a separate Gorkhaland, a long pending demand of the people of the hills. (ANI)
