Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 25 (ANI): BJP leader Shaina NC said that it is a great victory for India after the United States (US) Supreme Court denied the petition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, convicted for his role in the Mumbai terror attacks, paving the way for his extradition to India.
Speaking to ANI, Shaina emphasized that it is also a victory for all those who suffered in the Mumbai attack.
"This is a great victory for India and Bharat. Tahawwur Hussain Rana who is indicted for his role in 26/11 is a victory for all those who suffered in the Mumbai attack. As this petition was filed in 2024 November, against the earlier order in court that had ruled in favour of his extradition to India and the document in the petition is there, this only paves the way for his extradition and for the truth of all the perpetrators who were behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks," she said.
"This is a victory for Bharat, it is a victory for PM and victory for all the citizens who had to suffer because of the dastardly terror attacks by Rana and his conspiracy and the entire community that was involved in trying to destabilise India," the BJP leader added.
Maharashtra Congress Chief Nana Patole said that they would only comment after Rana is brought back to India.
"The government had said in 2014 too that when they come to power they would bring back Dawood. But they have not brought back Dawood to date. Be it Lalit Modi or Vijay Mallya left the country after looting the nation. But they have not been brought back to date. So, when this Government brings back Rana and what action they take against him, we will give our comments after all that happens," Patole said.
On January 21, The US Supreme Court denied a petition of writ of certiorari filed by Rana seeking to prevent his extradition to India. The writ was filed in November 2024 against an earlier order of a lower court that had ruled in favour of his extradition to India. A writ of certiorari is a legal document that allows a higher court to review a case from a lower court.
This could pave the way for his likely extradition to India. Rana was previously prosecuted in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The second superseding indictment charged him with three counts. The jury convicted him on Count 11 (conspiracy to provide material support to terrorism in Denmark). The jury also convicted Rana on Count 12 (providing material support to Lashkar-e Taiyba).
India's charges consist of conspiracy to commit various offences, including to wage war, to murder, to commit two forms of forgery, and to commit a terrorist act. Rana has remained in custody throughout the extradition process. (ANI)
