Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], Mar 20 (ANI): BJP workers on Wednesday "purified" a statue of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri with 'Gangajal' after it was garlanded by Congress general secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi.
The party workers alleged that the garlanding of the statue by Priyanka was an "insult" to the former the Prime Minister since her husband Robert Vadra and the Congress party are involved in corruption.
"We have purified the statue with Gangajal. This was to protest against the corrupt (UPA) government. They looted this country for 70 years," a BJP worker said.
Earlier in the day, Priyanka had garlanded the statue of Lal Bahadur Shastri at Shastri Chowk in Ramnagar.
Priyanka is on a three-day long ‘Ganga Yatra’ from Prayagraj to Varanasi. Priyanka’s tour focused on ‘Sanchi Baat Priyanka ke Saath’ in which she talked to people during her 140 kilometres long travel on a steamer boat to Assi Ghat in Varanasi.
The Lok Sabha elections will begin from April 11 and will go on till May 19 in seven phases. The polls in Uttar Pradesh will be held in all seven phases. The counting of votes will take place on May 23. (ANI)
