UP: Cold wave tightens grip, claims 16 lives in 24 hours
Lucknow [India], Dec. 9 (ANI): The steadily worsening weather has begun its onslaught in North India as 16 people have been killed in the last 24 hours from the severe cold wave in Uttar Pradesh. The dip in temperature mostly takes its toll on the poor and the homeless who spend their nights on the streets and the pavements in the cold. Although not cold by the standards of Europe and North America, the drop in temperature can have a devastating effect on the hundreds of thousands of homeless people in India. Meanwhile, the growingly severe fog conditions in the national capital have taken a major hit on operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and have also delayed several Delhi-bound trains. Around 107 trains are delayed, 32 rescheduled and 4 cancelled due to fog. According to the Delhi airport, more than 19 domestic and international flights were delayed or diverted at the Indira Gandhi International Airport while around 16 flights were cancelled. Earlier today, Delhiites woke up to a chilly morning as a dense layer of fog enveloped most parts of northern India on Friday. As predicted by the Met department, the city may also witness couple more mornings of dense fog in the coming days. (ANI)
