Umar Khalid comes out in support of Gurmehar, says Sehwag represents BCCI not India
New Delhi, [India], Feb. 28 (ANI): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid, whose presence as a speaker at a cultural event at Ramjas College triggered a spiral of violence at the Delhi University, has come out in support of Gurmehar Kaur and students of the Delhi University condemning former cricketer Virendra Sehwag's tweet saying he represents BCCI and not India. "Virender Sehwag played for BCCI, he does not represent India. The thousands of students and teachers who came out in Delhi University today, they represent India - a vision of a new India based on equality, justice and freedom," Khalid posted on Facebook. Sehwag had earlier tweeted an image of himself holding a placard that said, "I didn't score two triple centuries, my bat did." The image was an aimed at trolling Gurmehar Kaur, who in a video posted on youtube held a placard that said, "Pakistan did not kill my father, War did." Actor Randeep Hooda had supported Sehwag's tweet by saying, "Your tweet is even greater than a triple century." Gurmehar had today withdrawn herself from the campaign by tweeting, "I'm withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say. I have been through a lot and this is all my 20 year self could take". Taking on social media trolls, Khalid said that they are 'mere cowards' who are afraid of coming out on streets. "These are all paid trolls operating through multiple fake profiles. They are self-proclaimed nationalists who cannot even come on the streets to defend what they claim they believe in," he posted. Khalid, who is writing his PhD. dissertation on the culture of dissent in Bastar was invited to Ramjas College to speak on the issue of 'adivasi' protest movements. (ANI)
