Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], May 17 (ANI): Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) counting will be considered valid in Uttarakhand if it is found different from Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes for the 17th Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission said.

"Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) counting will be considered valid in Uttarakhand if it is found different from Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes for the 17th Lok Sabha polls," said Additional Chief Electoral Officer of Uttarakhand Dr V Shanmugam.

The Election Commission has issued detailed guidelines for the counting of votes to the Chief Electoral Officers of all the states. After the directions of the Supreme Court, VVPATs were used along with EVMs on all booths, five EVMs were set in each assembly area in the state.

"The votes registered in the respective VVPATs will be counted by the EC officials. The election body has earlier clarified that if any difference found in the countings of EVM and VVPAT then the VVPAT count will be declared as final and valid," Shanmugam said.

Voting for all 5 Lok Sabha seats of Uttarakhand was held on April 11. As per EC, the voter turnout in Uttarakhand declined as compared to 2014 in 7 Vidhan Sabha constituencies. Voter turnout in Haldwani, Bajpur, Haridwar, Kotdwar, Someshwar and Narendranagar constituencies too remained low in comparison to the previous elections.

The counting of votes will take place on May 23. (ANI)
