Panchkula (Haryana) [India], May 22 (ANI): Drawing a comparison between the arrests of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that a "tribal CM" continues to be behind bars.
The Wayanad MP was addressing a session titled 'Samvidhan Samman Sammelan' in Haryana's Panchkula.
"It is clearly mentioned in our Constitution that every citizen in the country should be treated equally. So my simple question is, what is the participation of 90 percent of people? Whether it is media or bureaucracy, 90 percent of people are not a part of it... it is as if they don't exist," Rahul Gandhi said.
"Two Chief Ministers were arrested. The tribal CM (Hemant Soren) is still in jail. He was arrested before and is still behind bars. The national media has forgotten him; it doesn't talk about him... Mayawati is corrupt but not Naveen Patnaik, Lalu Yadav is corrupt... if someone is tribal or Dalit, he is automatically framed," he added.
Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement in January this year in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged land scam. He is currently in judicial custody. He was not able to get any interim relief from the courts.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in March in connection with the alleged scam in the Delhi excise policy. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court until June 1.
The Congress leader further raised the Pune rash driving case and questioned why the juvenile accused was released on bail in a case where two people were killed, but truck drivers are sent to 10 years in jail for similar cases.
"If an Uber driver, cab driver, or truck driver hits someone accidentally, he is jailed for 10 years. A 17-year-old boy in Pune drives a Porsche after drinking alcohol, kills 2 people, and is asked to write an essay. If he writes an essay, then ask bus drivers, truck drivers, and tempo drivers to write essays too... two different languages are being used," Rahul Gandhi said.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 19 when a luxury car, driven by the juvenile, collided with a motorcycle near Kalyani Nagar in Pune. The incident resulted in the untimely deaths of two young individuals.
Further stating that he understands the "whole system from inside," the Congress MP alleged that the system is "aligned against the lower castes" deeply and at all levels. He further said that 90 per cent of people in the country "don't have" any representation.
"I have been sitting in the system since the day I was born. I understand the system from the inside. You cannot hide the system from me. How it works, whom it favours, how it favours, whom it protects, whom it attacks, I know everything because I come from inside the system. When my grandmother was the PM, my father was the PM. When Manmohan Singh was the PM, I used to go to the PM's house. So I know how the system works from the inside," Rahul Gandhi said.
He added, "I can tell you one thing, the system is aligned against the lower castes, severely and on every level. Look at the corporate system, media system, bureaucracy, military, and education. Ninety percent don't even have representation. And arguments of 'merit' are made. How is it that 90 percent of people don't have merit?"
Rahul Gandhi, the incumbent MP from Wayanad, is seeking a second term from the seat. Additionally, he is also contesting from the family bastion of Raebareli, a seat held by his mother until now. The voting on both seats has concluded. The counting of the votes is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)
