Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) [India], April 2 (ANI): Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kangana Ranaut hit out at the Congress party over party leader Supriya Shrinate's 'derogatory remarks' against her and said that those who can't respect women, how will they carry out welfare activities.
She also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and credited him for empowering women with multiple initiatives.
Notably, Ranaut has been named BJP's candidate for the Mandi seat.
Addressing a public rally in Shivabadar, Mandi, Ranaut said, "It is my good fortune that I have been selected as a candidate from Mandi. We are part of the world's biggest party. PM Modi is not an ordinary man. Today, he is praised across the world. He is the most popular leader in the world."
"This is Lok Sabha elections, where we will choose our Prime Minister. When he had to choose the representative here, he chose the daughter of Mandi. This is not a usual achievement and we all are grateful to him," she added
Attacking Congress, she accused the party of using derogatory words against women and said that the party had "ruined" the whole country.
"But, even on this, Congress said such bad words about the daughters of Mandi. This is their thinking on women...Those who can't respect women, can they work for our welfare? They had completely ruined the country. Today, PM Modi has worked a lot for the empowerment of women," she further said.
The voting for all four seats of Himachal Pradesh will take place on June 1 during the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
A controversy erupted after Congress leader Supriya Shrinate made derogatory remarks against Ranaut on her social media after the party announced her candidature.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a show cause notice to Congress leader Supriya Shrinate for her derogatory remarks. According to the ECI, the remarks by Shrinate were found to violate of MCC provisions and the ECI advisory dated March 1, 2024.
As the controversy raged, Shrinate clarified that she could "never make such personal and indecent comments about any woman" and claimed that many people have access to her social media accounts and someone else made this 'inappropriate' post.
BJP leaders had strongly condemned Shrinate over the remarks and demanded action from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The purported post from Congress' social media chairperson Supriya Shrinate on Monday, which featured a picture of Ranaut with an objectionable caption, has since been deleted. (ANI)
