New Delhi [India], December 20 (ANI): Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Friday slammed the BJP over the FIR filed against the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accusing the ruling party of trying to distract attention from Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on B.R. Ambedkar.
Speaking about the FIR, the Congress MP said that the protest that led to the parliament scuffle was intentionally staged by the BJP.
"Delhi Police will do whatever the home minister will say to them... Whatever happened in front of the Makar Dwar was completely planned...The home minister insulted BR Ambedkar, and we all demanded an apology, they planned all this to distract from the issue... He (the home minister) should have apologized... This FIR was not against Rahul Gandhi; this is against BR Ambedkar," Congress MP Jairam Ramesh told ANI.
CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar also backed the Congress alleging that the BJP had filed a fake case.
"It's a fake case. We were trying to protest peacefully and we all were blocked. Many MPs including me were pushed down by BJP MPs. I fell and had slight injuries also...To distract attention from the burning issue of insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar, the BJP is coming with a new version that a woman was attacked by Rahul Gandhi. This is completely baseless and we challenge the concerned authorities to make the video footage available in the public domain. We have an excellent CCTV camera system. Why can't you publish it and let the public know the truth?," he said.
The FIR was registered by Delhi police on Thursday in connection with a scuffle that took place in Parliament. Tensions erupted when members of the opposition and the ruling BJP-led NDA held separate protests, resulting in a face-off. Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that he was pushed, and two BJP members were injured during the incident.
Earlier in the day, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the FIR filed against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, saying that the government's actions reflect its desperation.
Speaking about the FIR, the Wayanad MP said, "The entire country is watching; they have slapped several cases on Rahul Gandhi. They bring in new FIRs and lie...This shows their desperation level."
On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi and other MPs from the INDIA alliance led protests in Parliament, demanding an apology and resignation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks on former law minister BR Ambedkar.
BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi alleged that he was injured after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed another MP, who then fell on him. Sarangi claimed that he was standing near the stairs when another member of Parliament (MP) fell on him, leading to an injury on his head. He was rushed for treatment in an ambulance.
"I was standing near the stairs when Rahul Gandhi came and pushed a fellow MP. That MP fell on me, causing me to fall as well," Sarangi told reporters.
Both the MPs were admitted to Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and the hospital authorities have claimed that the health condition of both the MPs is stable. (ANI)
