Firozabad (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 6 (ANI): Samajwadi Party MP Ramgopal Yadav on Sunday supported RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav's remarks on the Waqf Amendment Bill and said that several people have approached the Supreme Court regarding the issue and that the law will not stand in the court.
"Yes, this is unconstitutional. There is a clear mention in Article 26 of the Constitution that minorities will have the right to manage their religious affairs independently, and there shall be no interference in this matter. People have gone to the court, and this law cannot stand there," the SP leader said.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday strongly opposed the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill, Waqf (Amendment) Bill, declaring that if his party returns to power in Bihar, the Bill would be "thrown in the dustbin."
Addressing reporters in Patna, Yadav condemned the bill and said, "We will form the government and throw this (Waqf Amendment Bill) in the dustbin."
President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was passed by Parliament during the budget session of Parliament. The President also gave her assent to the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025, which too was passed by the Parliament.
The Rajya Sabha passed the Bill on Friday with 128 votes in favour and 95 against it, while the Lok Sabha cleared the bill after a lengthy debate, with 288 members voting in favour and 232 opposing it.
Several leaders including AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress MP Mohammed Jawed and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan have approached the Supreme Court against the Waqf Bill.
The bill, first introduced in August last year, was revised following recommendations by a Joint Parliamentary Committee. It amends the original Waqf Act of 1995, aiming to streamline the administration of Waqf properties across India. Key features include improving the registration process and incorporating technology to enhance the efficiency of Waqf Board operations. (ANI)
