Telangana Govt. to bring new reservation act to raise ST quota, include Muslims
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], Apr. 12 (ANI): The Telangana Government on Wednesday decided to extend the reservations to Muslim population apart from raising the existing quota of the scheduled tribes (STs) to 12 percent. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao on Wednesday said the cabinet would meet once again on April 15 to further discuss the exact percentage of reservation for Muslims while sticking to the promises made in their election manifesto. Announcing the decision after holding a cabinet meeting on late Wednesday evening, Rao asserted that there was no rule that reservation should not increase 50 percent. The total percentage of reservations will reach 62 percent if the state government decides to provide full 12 percent reservations each to Muslims and STs as promised in the election manifesto by the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). "When Tamil Nadu can have more that 50 percent reservation, then why not Telangana?" Rao added. The chief minister said he was hopeful that the Centre would help get the Presidential ascent for the new Act. (ANI)
