Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) [India], April 23 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (CPI) demanded the withdrawal of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which continues to be in force in Tamil Nadu after the end of polling for the first phase on April 19.
In a letter to the district collector, the district secretary of the party, C Sivasamy, requested the withdrawal of the rules pertaining to the conduct of candidates ahead of polling ahead of Labour Day on May 1 and the Merchants' Day on May 5.
Polling for all 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu was conducted in Phase 1 on April 19.
May Day, which has been observed since the first day of May 1923, is usually marked in the morning in the Coimbatore district by hoisting flags on flagpoles, marching, and through public meetings. Coimbatore is home to many industrial establishments.
The Coimbatore Committee of the Communist Party of India requested permission to hold public events to mark May Day and Merchant's Day, by lifting the curbs that are currently in place under the model code of conduct.
"On behalf of the Coimbatore Committee of the Communist Party of India, we request the District Election Officer and the Collector to bring the above request of the party to the attention of the Election Commission and take appropriate action," district secretary of CPI C Sivasamy stated in an official release.
