Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 9 (ANI): Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal minister Shashi Panja on Thursday alleged that West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari had abused and defamed women in the entire West Bengal.
Panja, the State minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare told ANI that ever since the video of the sting operation in Sandeshkali had surfaced, the BJP has been indulging in "disgusting politics on rape."
She alleged that women who had gone to withdraw their false allegation of rape had been threatened with dire consequences by local BJP leaders.
"Ever since the video of this sting operation surfaced, the BJP has started doing disgusting politics regarding rape. Women cannot be blamed here. Women were also asked to write that they had been raped, which is a terrible thing. The women are now saying that they were asked to write (in the complaint) a lie. They want to take back their complaints because they are not true. Now that they are approaching police stations to do so, the BJP leaders are threatening and intimidating them," she said.
"Suvendu Adhikari had a meeting in Bankura yesterday. During this, women workers of Trinamool raised some slogans and Suvendu Adhikari, influenced by this, abused them. Using something that has not happened for political gain is a crime. Others are now abusing women. They are defaming women and also Bengal," Panja added.
Earlier today, Trinamool Congress lodged a complaint to the Election Commission against Adhikari and others over Sandeshkhali incident.
They held a protest march in Sandeshkhali's Trimohini area against the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) alleged conspiracy against women.
On Saturday, a purported sting broadcast by a local TV channel, showed Gangadhar Koyal, a BJP mandal president in Sandeshkhali block II, claiming that no rape or sexual harassment took place and that the complaints were filed at the behest of Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari. (ANI)
