Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], September 25 (ANI): Hailing late CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that his demise has left everyone in deep sorrow and that his ability to understand and connect with people from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds was remarkable.
"The demise of Sitaram Yechury has left everyone in deep sorrow. His ability to understand and connect with people from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds was remarkable...Yechury played a decisive role in several major movements in the country. He had a unique ability to comprehend the broader picture of the nation, and his contributions were pivotal in movements like the farmers' protests," said CM Vijayan while addressing the memorial meeting held for late CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.
"From his youth, Yechury's leadership skills were widely recognized, and he emerged as a beloved figure among the public, growing from a student leader into a respected public servant...Yechury was one of the leading intellectuals of our time and a key figure in maintaining Left unity. His loss is particularly significant in the current political climate of India. It is not only a great loss for the CPI(M) but also the global communist movement. Yechury maintained a warm and lasting relationship with the party in Kerala, and his passing leaves a void that cannot easily be filled," he added.
Sitaram Yechury joined the CPI(M) in 1975. He was arrested during the emergency for his political activities. He was elected to the Central Committee of the Party in 1985 at the 12th Congress and he remained in the Central Committee till now.
Yechury was elected to the Central Secretariat in 1989 and to the Polit Bureau in 1992 at the 14th Congress of the Party. He was elected as the General Secretary of the CPI(M) at the 21st Congress in 2015, a position he continued until now.
Sitaram Yechury was a member of the Rajya Sabha for two terms from 2005 to 2017. He served as the leader of the CPI(M) group and was an effective parliamentarian. He was given the best parliamentarian award in 2017. (ANI)
