Kozhikode (Kerala) [India], October 14 (ANI): Senior Congress leader and Kerala Leader of Opposition (LoP) VD Satheesan has strongly condemned the alleged attack on party MP Shafi Parambil, claiming that the latter was "beaten up by the police" without any provocation.
Warning to agitate, Satheesan demanded that action be taken against the concerned police officers involved in the alleged attack against the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president.
"The Superintendent of Police (SP) has announced that the police beat up Shafi Parambil without any provocation. The SP himself agreed in a meeting. We are demanding necessary action against the concerned police officials. Otherwise, this is a very serious matter. We will agitate against the officials," the Kerala LoP told ANI.
This comes as Parambil leaves the hospital after three days of treatment for injuries sustained during the Perambra clash. The Congress MP suffered a fractured nose during the police action and underwent emergency surgery at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
As this happened, the Congress announced a statewide protest on Saturday against the alleged "police brutality" against a sitting MP.
Parambil suffered fractures to both his left and right nasal bones during the incident. He underwent surgery and remained under medical care for three days at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
The injuries occurred during a police lathicharge in Perambra, Kozhikode, following clashes between United Democratic Front (UDF) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers.
The confrontation broke out during a protest march of UDF workers, leading the police to resort to tear gas and lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Several UDF workers were also injured in the incident when the two groups came face-to-face.
Following the violent clashes in Perambra on the night of October 10, the police have registered a case against Vadakara MP and KPCC Working President Shafi Parambil and several others. The FIR names 692 individuals, including prominent Congress leaders such as Kozhikode DCC President Adv. K Praveen Kumar, alleging that they attacked the police during the incident.
A separate case has also been registered against Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers, listing 492 identified individuals, for unlawful assembly, blocking roads, and obstructing vehicular movement.
Tension flared in front of the Kozhikode Police Commissioner's office as UDF workers staged a protest against the police and the Pinarayi Vijayan government in October, which was followed by violent clashes between UDF and CPI (M) workers at Perambra.
Protests continued late into the night in several parts of the state. Police faced resistance while removing demonstrators, and tension prevailed as Congress activists blocked roads at multiple locations before eventually dispersing. (ANI)
