Satpuli Facebook incident: Minor taken into custody, situation under control, says police
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], July 10 (ANI): Following the clashes between two groups that took place in Garhwal district's Satpuli town over a controversial picture was shared on the social media, Additional Director General of Police Ram Singh Meena on Monday stated that the minor, who shared the controversial post, was taken into custody. Speaking to ANI, Ram Singh said, "The controversial picture was shared on the minor boy's social media account. Soon after that, the members of several right-wing organisations gathered at the vegetable shop which belonged to the boy's family in the Satpuli market. They vandalised it and even set parts of the shop ablaze. We have taken the boy into custody." "The post was removed immediately and the situation is now under control. We will check into the matter and get other details too. There are CCTV cameras installed all around the town for better security check. We also have an account on Facebook for the locals here - if they get to know any kind of communal clashes arising they can message us anytime. It was a big challenge for the police and we managed it well," he added. Earlier in the day, a social media post led to clashes between two groups in Garhwal district's Satpuli town of Uttarakhand. Tension gripped the town when a minor boy allegedly posted an 'offensive' picture of the Kedarnath shrine on Facebook. Seeing the sensitivity, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Magistrate (DM) rushed to the spot. Angry local residents gathered in streets and marched to the Satpuli Police Station raising slogans and seeking action against the culprit. The police are also on a look out to identify the members of the right-wing organisations who vandalised the shop and set parts of it on fire. Recently, in a similar incident, clashes broke out between two groups in West Bengal's Basirhat over a Facebook post. (ANI)
