Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], July 14 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, Sunil Ambekar criticised the Emergency imposed by the then Indira Gandhi-led Congress government in 1975 and said that Sangh workers also underwent a lot of struggle and torture during that period.
He said such things never happen in a democracy, and the Sangh had also opposed Emergency from time to time.
Addressing a press conference in Ranchi on Sunday, Sunil Ambekar said, "The Emergency that was imposed in 1975 was definitely wrong. In a democracy we talk about freedom and independence. Such things should not happen. The Sangh has opposed the Emergency from time to time and the Sangh has also struggled, its workers went to jail. Many workers had to face torture, there was a lot of struggle and I think democracy has been established in our country once again."
The RSS leader further elaborated on programmes carried out by the organisation for people of different age groups, across the country. He said that over 24,000 people took part in these events.
"Last year, over 1 lakh new candidates had taken training at Sangh...this year, so far, almost double the number of new youth are taking training in the Sangh. So overall it is clearly visible how youth are getting attracted to the ideology of the Sangh, the work of the Sangh and the method of working dedicatedly for the nation," Ambekar said.
"The second thing is that we have given the option of joining RSS on the Sangh website...in areas where there is no Shakha, people from those regions join RSS through the website. This option was started in 2012, every year about 1.25 lakh people join it. This year till June end, 66,529 people have joined RSS," he further added.
Last week, the Centre announced that 25 will be observed as "Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas"(Constitution Murder Day) to pay tributes to all those who suffered and fought against the gross abuse of power during the period of Emergency 1975.
The government said that every year on June 25, the country will remember the great contribution of those who endured the "inhuman pain" of the Emergency of 1975. A notification has also been issued by the Government of India to celebrate June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas'. (ANI)
