Amethi (Uttar [Pradesh) [India], April 30 (ANI): Amid the speculations on whether Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will contest from Amethi and Raebareli, Congress leader Deepak Singh on Tuesday exuded confidence that Congress will win from Amethi and Raebareli and will defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha elections.
"BJP and Smriti are rattled. She (Smriti Irani) herself is saying Rahul Gandhi will come, Rahul Gandhi will come to Amethi. Although her dates were proven wrong, but yes Rahul Gandhi will definitely come here. We all have faith that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will come and defeat the BJP. Congress will win the Lok Sabha elections from here and will win with a huge margin," Singh told ANI when asked about Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's candidature from Amethi and Raebareli.
According to sources, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi are likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Rae Bareli and Amethi seats, respectively.
Earlier, posters featuring Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared outside the party's office on Wednesday in the Gauriganj area of Amethi. This raised speculations of a possible ticket for Vadra.
Rahul Gandhi is already contesting Lok Sabha elections from Kerala's Wayanad seat, where polling is underway on Friday. Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi.
The Rae Bareli seat was held by Sonia Gandhi, who now moved to the Rajya Sabha, after she announced that she would not be contesting the Lok Sabha elections anymore, thus leaving the seat of the Congress bastion vacant.
As per the seat agreement between the Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress will contest 17 seats and the Samajwadi Party the remaining 63 seats in the electorally crucial state.
Apart from its traditional strongholds of Rae Bareli and Amethi, the Congress is also contesting on Varanasi, Ghaziabad and Kanpur. Notably, Prime Minister and BJP leader Narendra Modi is also contesting from Varanasi.
Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituencies will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)
