Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], December 5 (ANI): Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra on Thursday, described Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's stoppage by police at the Ghazipur border while attempting to visit violence-hit Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday as a "conspiracy."
"Rahul Gandhi has been stopped as part of a conspiracy. The NDA government has been formed with only 44% votes. That means 56% are against them. The LoP represents the entire opposition and the person representing 56% of the country's population is sitting on a constitutional post. If Rahul Gandhi is going there, then how was he stopped, why was he stopped and what is the mechanism behind this? It was a well-planned conspiracy to not let Rahul Gandhi go..," he said..
He further said that stopping Rahul Gandhi is against "Constitutional right', as he holds constitutional post.
"This is a condemnable incident...Rahul Gandhi is saying that he will go alone but he will meet the victim's family. That is his constitutional right. Rahul Gandhi is not a common citizen. He is the LoP and he has a constitutional post. There is no law to stop him...," he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after being stopped at the Ghazipur border in Ghaziabad on his way to violence-hit Sambhal.
The Congress MP stated that visiting Sambhal was his constitutional duty and described the restrictions placed on him as unconstitutional.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi wrote in Hindi: "The police stopped us from going to Sambhal. As the Leader of the Opposition, it is my right and duty to go there. Yet I was stopped. I am willing to go alone, but even that was not allowed. This is against the Constitution. Why is the BJP afraid? Why is it using the police to conceal its failures? Why is it suppressing the message of truth and brotherhood?"
The Congress leader also shared a video showing his interaction with a police officer.
The violence in Sambhal erupted on November 24 during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of a Mughal-era mosque. The clashes resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries among police personnel and locals.
The ASI survey was prompted by a petition filed in a local court, claiming the mosque was originally built on the site of a Harihar temple. (ANI)
