"Only wasting time and resources" in the name of cleaning Ganga: NGT
New Delhi [India], Feb. 7 (ANI): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday pulled up on National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) for wasting time and resources in the name of the cleaning the river. "There is total lack of communication between various government agencies. Why isn't there a proper plan to deal with all kind of polluting industries? Why allow loopholes?" asked the Tribunal. A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar asked the Uttar Pradesh government agencies to work together for the cause, saying, "The Prime Minister has given you a goal, take it as a national project." The Tribunal yesterday said that NMCG was a waste of money as they spend thousands crore but the end result is same. The bench had also indicated that it was inclined towards ordering the shutdown of industries along Ganga in Kanpur if discharge treatment projects not here. NGT has now asked Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and NMCG to give data on how many drains in Kanpur discharge into Ganga and how many have sewage treatment plants also what will be done about treatment of discharge from industries. The Central government has allotted over 2,000 crore under the 'Namami Gange' programme for the purpose of cleaning the Ganga. Hearing on the matter will continue tomorrow. (ANI)
