New Delhi [India], January 26 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Sunday questioned the Aam Admi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government following an alleged attack on the statue of BR Ambedkar in Amritsar.
The BJP leader condemned the incident and raised concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation prevailing in the border state.
He further said that the incident took place outside Kotwali police station, Amritsar at a time when the country was celebrating its 76th Republic Day.
"Today on the pious occasion of Republic Day, BR Ambedkar's statue and the Constitution of India were insulted outside Police Station Kotwali, Amritsar, in broad daylight," he claimed in a video message.
"This incident is condemnable... Punjab AAP's Bhagwant Mann government is in deep sleep. Punjab's law and order has deteriorated. The Chief Minister is busy with tourism while BR Ambedkar's statue is tampered with and the constitution is insulted. That too outside the Police Station at the main crossroads of Amritsar...," he added.
Punjab police said earlier on Sunday that they have arrested a "few miscreants" for allegedly attempting to tamper with the statue of BR Ambedkar in Amritsar's Town Hall area. The incident occurred on Republic Day, raising concerns on a day of national celebration.
Jagjit Singh Walia, the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in Amritsar, said that a case has been registered after making some arrests. The AIG Amritsar further mentioned that the police are currently investigating the matter, but the exact motive behind the incident remains unclear.
"A few miscreants tried to tamper with BR Ambedkar's statue at Town hall. We caught them and a case has been registered and an investigation is going on. The motive behind the incident is yet to be found out...," Walia told ANI.
Further details regarding the incident are awaited (ANI)
