Wayanad (Kerala) [India], November 3 (ANI): Congress leader and party's candidate for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow in Wayanad on Sunday.
She alleged that the reputation of her brother and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was being maligned by a campaign run by the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that only the people from Wayanad understood that her brother was fighting for truth.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "I owe you a great debt of gratitude because 5 years ago, when my brother (Rahul Gandhi) stood for election from Wayanad, he was facing immense difficulty. His reputation was being destroyed by a campaign run by the BJP and PM Narendra Modi. Through social media, huge efforts, huge resources were put into this campaign so that people believed a lot of lies about my brother."
She further said that throughout the history of mankind whoever has fought for what is right, for the truth has faced an attack by the forces of deceit.
"My debt of gratitude to you is that you recognise this man despite this whole campaign, despite everything that was being said to you, you recognise that my brother was fighting for you, he was fighting for India, he was fighting for the truth, and he was fighting for what was right. When the whole world turned their backs on him, you supported him, you gave him courage, you gave him love, you brought him into your homes, you welcomed him as family and he got immense courage and strength from you," she further added.
She further said that this strength gave him the courage to walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, 4000 km, and then again from Manipur to Mumbai in the name of peace.
Earlier Priyanka Vadra slammed the PM Modi-led central government, saying it gives priority to big business interests over the well-being of the people.
She alleged that the Modi government aims to remain in power by dividing people, spreading hatred, and oppressing democratic institutions.
Addressing a rally in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "Modi ji's government works only for his big businessman friends. His objective is not to give you a better life. It is not to find new jobs. It is not to provide better health or education initiatives and programs. It is simply to stay in power by any means possible. And what are those means? Those means are dividing you, spreading anger, spreading hatred amongst you, Taking your rights away from you oppressing democratic institutions."
Wayanad, a Congress bastion is going to see a contest between Congress's Priyanka Gandhi, BJP's Navya Haridas and the Left candidate Sathyan Mokeri in the upcoming bypolls.
Priyanka Gandhi is contesting from the Wayanad constituency as a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate, is seeking election from the seat her brother Rahul Gandhi vacated.
Wayanad's seat was vacated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he was also elected to Lok Sabha from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh in the general elections held earlier this year.
Wayanad will go to the polls on November 13 along with voting for bye-elections in 47 assembly seats across 15 states. (ANI)
