President Mukherjee pitches for need of reforms in judicial system

New Delhi [India], Feb. 22 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee has pitched for reforms in judicial system to make it more efficient. Speaking at a book release function at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday evening, President Mukherjee said every system needs constant changes as it develops flaws over a period of time. He also mentioned that without sufficient resources judicial reforms cannot be undertaken successfully. The President expressed concern over vacancy of judges in various courts of the country and called for having a system in place to address the issue saying there is no lack of talent. On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said efficient governance can minimise litigation and thereby reduce unnecessary burden of the judiciary. He said his government has repealed 1200 obsolete laws so far and process is underway for repealing more such laws. He also stressed on the need for bringing changes in the system in tune with global practices. In his address, Chief Justice Of India Justice J.S Khehar said that justice is inspirational, while judicial reforms are only aspirational. Justice Khehar assured that the top court will try its best for early disposal of pending cases. He said, the appointment of judges in Supreme Court and some high courts have been recently done. He expressed hope that recommendations made by the collegium for more appointments will soon be approved by the government. He said, the Memorandum of Procedure for appointment of judges is expected to be finalised in the next two weeks. Speaking on the occasion, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that legislation must be left to those who are elected to legislate and governance must be left to the realm of those elected to govern. The book titled 'Judicial reforms-Recent Global Trends' is written by Justice Dalveer Bhandari, member of International Court of Justice. Prime Minister released the book and presented its first copy to President Mukherjee. (ANI)
