Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 19 (ANI): Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), under the leadership of President Anbumani Ramadoss, staged a protest on Friday against the DMK government's electricity tariff hike and called the decision "electricity terrorism".
PMK leaders held a protest to condemn the state's DMK government over the recent electricity tariff hike. PMK leaders raised slogans against the DMK government.
PMK President and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss, while staging a protest, said, "Just after the Vikravandi by-poll, they have announced the electricity bill tariff hike, which will be applicable from July 1. A total of 33.7 percent tariff has been increased so far under the DMK government multiple times. In the history of Tamil Nadu, no one has ever done this much of an electricity bill tariff hike. This is "electricity terrorism" against the people of Tamil Nadu. In 23 months, 33.7 percent of electricity bill tariffs have been increased."
He further accused the ruling party, DMK, of corruption and said, "There is no proper administration in the Tamil Nadu government. There is corruption everywhere, and that's why the government is saying that the electricity board is facing losses."
Earlier on Thursday, Desiya Murpoku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) announced that it will conduct a state-wide protest on July 25 against the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, raising many issues.
The party said that the protest is against the electricity bill hike, the "non-availability" of essential items in the public distribution system in the state and also against the Karnataka government's refusal to comply with the Cauvery water management authority's direction.
Meanwhile, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader Sellur Raju on Thursday slammed the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for increasing the electricity tariff and said that the MK Stalin-led government has given the electricity tariff hike as a "gift" to the people who voted for the DMK in 40 constituencies in the last parliamentary election.
Earlier on July 16, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) said that it has been compelled to increase the electricity tariff to cover increasing financial loss.
The state power distribution company said that the total financial loss of the Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation, which was Rs 18.954 crore in 2011-12, increased to Rs 94,312 crore in the last 10 years, TANGEDCO said in a press release.
The loan amount of Rs 43,493 crore to Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation and Power Network Corporation in 2011-12 has increased three times in the last 10 years to Rs 1,59,823 crore till (2021-22).
Opposition party leaders like All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State President Annamalai condemned the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led Tamil Nadu government for the power tariff hike. (ANI)
