PM Modi taking close cognizance of NE flood situation: Jitendra Singh
New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh on Thursday said the Centre is providing all possible assistance to the people, who have been affected by the tragic flood in Assam and adjoining areas in the north-east. Talking to ANI, Singh said the Government of India is maintaining contact will all the state governments of Northeast India regarding the flood. "The Prime Minister is himself taking cognizance of it. It was under his direction that two teams have already proceeded to northeast. One of them is led by Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiran Rijiju ji and who are travelling to the affected parts of Assam and another to Manipur. We are maintaining close contact will all the three state governments, both through the PMO and Ministry of DoNER. I have personally spoke to the three CMs.all the state government are satisfied with the kind of co-operation being lead by the government of India. Their morale is also high because the PM is taking close cognisense of it," he said. He also said that the GOI will soon start operation of preventing the aftermath of the flood mainly the diseases. "There have been quite heavy floods in the three states of northeast, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam. We have been facing floods in Manipur and Assam earlier also but the difference this time is that the rainfall is tremendously high compared to earlier rain. For example, in the first eleven or twelve days of the month of July this year, the rainfall is almost more than 100 percent, compared to what it was during the same period last year or before last year. And therefore, not only flood is very huge but the time the rescue operation were brought into operation the rainfall again goes in upsurge and once again a surge in the flood water. And the rescue operation gets effected," he added. Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju chaired a review meeting with officials on Assam floods in Lakhimpur. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that the Central Government is ready to extend every possible assistance to the people who have been affected by the tragic floods in the state and adjoining areas in the north-east, adding people are receiving food supplies on time. "The Central Government is ready to extend as much possible assistance to those affected. I met people in the relief camps and they informed that they are receiving food supply from the government on time. We will do assessment and submit a report soon," Sonowal told the media here. The locals have been shifted to safer places after massive inundation in Assam following incessant rains causing floods. Earlier yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the current flood situation in various parts of the north-eastern region and assured all possible help to combat the situation. Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to express solidarity with the people of the north-east and asserted that the entire nation stands by the people of the affected region. "I am anguished by the situation arising due to floods in various parts of the Northeast. I share the pain of all those affected by floods. The entire nation stands with the people of Northeast during this time. Centre assures all possible help to normalise the situation," tweeted the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Modi further said that he had spoken to Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and MoS home Kiren Rijiju in the regard. "I have spoken to Arunachal Pradesh CM @PemaKhanduBJP & other officials both in Delhi & the states on the flood situation," Prime Minister Modi said. "I have also asked my colleague @KirenRijiju to personally supervise the rescue, relief operations & facilitate all possible help needed," he added. Sonowal, earlier on Tuesday, had paid a visit to Lahorighat of the state's Morigaon district and took stock of the measures that the Water Resources Department has taken so far to control the menace. He directed the department to take immediate steps to contain erosion. Sonowal convened a high-level meeting at the circuit house, Morigaon, and reviewed the situation emanated from flood and erosion in the district. (ANI)
