New Delhi [India], May 5 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and many other political leaders on Sunday condemned the killing of BJP leader Gul Mohammad Mir.
Mir was shot dead by terrorists on Saturday at Nowgam village in Anantnag district of south Kashmir. The PM Modi took to the micro-blogging website to condemn the killing.
"Strongly condemn the killing of Shri Ghulam Mohammed Mir. His contribution towards strengthening the party in J&K will always be remembered. There is no place for such violence in our country. Condolences to his family and well-wishers," he said.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik also condemned the killing and expressed grief over the tragic loss of life. He directed K Vijay Kumar, his advisor, to ensure early arrest of the perpetrators of the crime and to spare no one who tries to create fear in the valley.
Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office and MP from Jammu and Kashmir expressed his anger over the 'shameful act.'
"Gul Mir was a party leader who stood with us through thick and thin. It's a shameful act carried out by disgruntled elements seeking to interrupt the ongoing poll process and ones who are possibly rattled by the huge participation in favour of BJP, which wasn't seen earlier in the valley," Jitendra told ANI.
He also stated that he had spoken to Governor and Home Ministry officials to conduct an inquiry into the killing and to ensure the protection of all BJP workers.
"I have had word with the Governor and officials of the Home Ministry. I believe the Governor has issued an instruction to carry out a detailed inquiry and has also assured us that adequate security will be provided to all BJP 'karyakartas' who are active in the election process," he said.
Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said the killing of BJP leader in the valley was a sad incident. She also added that she had requested the Governor to declare a ceasefire in the state during the month of Ramzan as it was the month of peace.
Police said 60-year-old Mir sustained serious bullet injuries in the chest and abdomen and was rushed to a local hospital where the doctors on duty declared him 'brought dead'. Mir had unsuccessfully contested the assembly polls from Doru in 2008 and 2014. (ANI)
