Physical education book row: Social activists hold writer responsible
Kolkata (West Bengal)/New Delhi [India], Apr.14 (ANI): The social activists on Friday demanded that the writer of a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) book should be held guilty for telling the students the 'ideal figure' of women. A Class XII Physical Education textbook, which is being taught at various schools affiliated to the CBSE, describes 36-24-36 as the 'best body shape for females'. Social activist Shaswati Ghosh told ANI that she was speechless when she came to know about this issue, adding the Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry was contemplating action soon after this matter came in public domain. "Unfortunately, what has been written is quite prevalent in the society. The publisher is the one who is not an editor. I am not for punishing the responsible person, but I think the writer should be counselled properly as he is mentally ill, who sees a woman in terms of body statistics and not as a human being," said Ghosh. Another social activist Shamina Shafiq said the person who wrote it and approved the content must first be held responsible instead of targeting the publisher. Demanding action against the writer and editor, she said, "If we want the society to respect women then we need to give students the right education." After the issue snowballed, the HRD Ministry has assured action against the publisher. The book titled "Health and Physical Education" has been written by Dr V.K Sharma and published by Delhi-based New Saraswati House. (ANI)
