New Delhi [India], January 6 (ANI): Reacting to BJP's candidate Ramesh Bidhuri's 'controversial' remarks on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday called his statement "petty" and said that political parties shouldn't get into these things.
Tharoor further stated that people should behave with respect whether they agree with somebody or not.
"Frankly, I think this is petty. We shouldn't get into these things. To be very honest, what really matters to us is that people should respect each other and not show each other disrespect in politics. We may have disagreements but that doesn't mean there should be any disrespect expressed. I think that people should behave with mutual respect whether they agree with somebody or not. We are not going around saying such things about BJP people, they should not be saying this about our side either," Tharoor told ANI.
BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri had sparked a row with 'controversial' remarks on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh on X shared his video, where Bidhuri stated that they would make all the roads in Kalkaji like the "cheeks of Priyanka Gandhi" if BJP comes to power.
Meanwhile, Bidhuri on Sunday expressed regret over his controversial remarks about Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra amid Congress outrage.
Speaking to ANI, Bidhuri clarified that his comments were made in the context of remarks by RJD supremo Lalu Yadav and emphasized that the Congress party had remained silent when similar statements were made during his tenure as chief minister of Bihar.
"Such statements have been made before. I have said that in the context of what Lalu Yadav had said. Congress remained silent on that even when he (Lalu Yadav) was a minister in their govt. If anyone is hurt by my remark, I express regret over it and I take my words back," the BJP leader said.
Lalu Prasad Yadav once made a notable promise during a rally in Bihar. He vowed to make roads in the state as smooth as the cheeks of actor-turned-politician and BJP MP Hema Malini.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate strongly criticised the BJP candidate, terming the remark as "shameful," and accused the BJP of fostering an anti-women mindset.
Taking to X, Shrinate said that Bidhuri's statement against Congress Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad was not only shameful but also showed his "disgusting" mentality towards women.
The assembly elections in Delhi are likely to be held in February 2025.
Congress, which was in power in Delhi for 15 successive years, has performed poorly in the past two assembly polls, failing to win any seat.
AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats in the 2020 assembly elections and BJP secured eight seats. (ANI)
