Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], September 1 (ANI): Rajasthan Bharatiya Janata Party President CP Joshi on Friday, speaking about 'One Nation, One Election' , said that the people of the country had been demanding it for a long time.
"Although the committee has been set up now, the people of the country have been demanding it for a long time in the national interest", Joshi said while speaking to ANI.
"Due to different elections in the country, a code of conduct is imposed from time to time which creates a hindrance in public work. Now, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, a step towards 'one nation one election' was taken and now, the work is in progress", Joshi added.
The Union government has constituted a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of 'One Nation, One Election' which envisages the holding of general election and state Assembly elections simultaneously.
Sources said that the committee will explore the possibility of bringing legislation regarding it. A parliamentary standing committee, the Law Commission and Niti Ayog had earlier examined the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal and submitted reports on the subject.
The government has decided to call a Special Session of Parliament from September 18-22 where it is speculated that the government could bring a bill for this proposal to take effect.
With five states going to the polls later this year and a few more to go to polls with the General Elections due in 2024 there is speculation that One Nation, One Election could become a reality very soon.
Speaking on the special session of the Parliament, the Rajasthan BJP Chief said, "The opposition should participate in it. This is not happening for the first time. Special sessions have been called for in order to accomplish an important task".
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, earlier today, said, "Today the country is facing farmers' issues, rising unemployment, China's aggression... If the special session addresses all these issues then it's welcomed. If it is used to divert attention from these issues then it shows that BJP is nervous. I want to ask them (central govt) as to when will a committee be formed on inflation, corruption, rising unemployment, women's reservation..." (ANI)
