"People of Bengal only knows Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Rani Rashmoni," Mahua Moitra on BJP Krishnanagar candidate 'Rani Maa' Amrita Roy

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 28 (ANI): Reacting to the BJP fielding Krishnanagar royal family's 'Rani Maa' Amrita Roy against Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress leader said that the only 'Raja' Bengalis know of is Raja Ram Mohan Roy, and the only 'Rani' we know of is Rani Rashmoni.

West Bengal: On BJP fielding Krishnanagar royal family's 'Rani Maa' Amrita Roy against her, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra says, "People of Bengal know only Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rani Rashmoni. Iske upar kitne raja hai, kitni rani hai, kisi ko maloom nahi hain aap unse pouchiye (No one knows how many kings and queens there are on it, you ask them)," Moitra said.
Amrita Roy has been pitted against expelled Trinamool Congress MP and firebrand leader, Mahua Moitra, from Krishnanagar.
Moitra was recently disqualified from the Lok Sabha following an Ethics Committee panel report on allegations of 'cash-for-query' against her.
Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Rajmata (Queen mother) Amrita Roy, a member of erstwhile royalty and BJP's Krishnanagar Lok Sabha candidate, and said that the BJP was committed to uprooting corruption in the country.
During the phone call with Krishnanagar's 'Rajmata', PM Modi said he was exploring legal options to ensure that the money looted from the poor goes back to them by way of cash and assets that the Directorate of Enforcement attached from alleged corrupt individuals.
The Lok Sabha elections in 42 Parliamentary Constituencies of West Bengal are scheduled to take place across seven phases, starting April 19.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured 22 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 18 out of the 42 parliamentary seats in the state. The Congress had to settle for just two seats.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominated the tally with 34 seats while the BJP bagged only 2 seats. The CPI (M) won 2 seats, while the Congress secured 4 seats.
Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1. Assembly polls will also be held in four states. The counting of votes has been scheduled for June 4. (ANI)
