Oppn to approach EC on EVM tampering issue

New Delhi [India], Feb 1 (ANI): Opposition parties met on Friday and announced that they will approach the Election Commission of India on Monday over the issue of alleged tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Addressing a press conference after attending the ‘Save the Nation, Save the Democracy’ meeting called by the Congress to discuss a joint strategy on EVMs, party president Rahul Gandhi said: "On Monday at 5.30 pm we (Opposition leaders) will go to the election commission over EVMs."
He added: "The main issue with the EVMs is that there is always a doubt in the mind of people of this country. So we want to create a backup system so that people can be certain about what is going on. It is about building confidence in the people in the electoral system."
Friday's meeting which was by 21 Opposition parties was convened as some parties had raised questions on the efficacy of EVMs and demanded a return to the old ballot paper system.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Satish Chandra Mishra, DMK’s Kanimozhi, Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien, CPI’s D Raja were among those who attended the meeting. (ANI)
