Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], September 18 (ANI): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday welcomed the Union Cabinet's decision approving 'One Nation, One Election' and said that it will help speed up development.
He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the "historic" decision.
"The approval of One Nation, One Election by the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an important and welcome step. This decision will help strengthen the security system and increase the pace of development. Apart from bringing political stability, it will also give a new direction to the economic progress of the country. We heartily thank the the Prime Minister for such a historic decision," he said in a post on X.
Earlier today, the Cabinet approved the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal, which proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, with urban body and panchayat polls to be held within 100 days.
The High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, constituted under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year.
The government has said that the report, comprising 18,626 pages, is an outcome of extensive consultations with stakeholders, experts, and research work of 191 days, since its constitution on September 2, 2023. (ANI)
