North east monsoon arrives in TN, farmers cheer
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Oct. 31 (ANI): The advent of north-east monsoon rain has brought cheers to the delta farmers of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai, Director Balachandran, yesterday announced the arrival of monsoon showers in the state. It is reported that isolated rains were recorded in southern districts of Tirunelveli, Kannya Kumari and central districts of Tiruchirapalli and Pudukottai. The arrival of the northeast monsoon showers has brought much needed relief to farmers in the delta region as they need water till January 28 to save samba crops. The water level in Mettur Dam has been coming down and reached 45 feet. The inflow was recorded to be very low measured just above 100 cusecs. The PWD authorities have also reduced the release of water from 12,000 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs from Mettur for delta irrigation. The Met office has forecasted that north east monsoon this year will most likely to be normal. (ANI)
