Pune (Maharashtra) [India], November 9 (ANI): Union Minister and BJP leader Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said that the success of the 'Ladki Behen' scheme in Maharashtra has caused worry among Congress leadership and the party too has made some promises which "lack credibility" with people.
Addressing a press conference here, Rijiju said that the 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Behan Yojana' scheme is popular among people.
"Various schemes have been implemented by the Central government after 2014 and the women in Maharashtra are very happy with the implementation of the scheme...A core group of Congress is worried after the implementation of the scheme as the scheme has received a lot of support...The Congress party have started making some promises but no one trusts the promises of the Congress party," he said.
He said Congress had given 'garibi hatao' slogan in the seventies and it was BJP governments who took meaningful steps for the welfare of the poor.
Political campaigning is gaining momentum in Maharashtra for the assembly polls. The opposition MVA coalition, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (SCP) is seeking to oust Mahayuti alliance, which includes Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
One of the most closely watched contests will be in Baramati, where NCP leader Ajit Pawar is set to face his nephew, Yugendra Pawar. Yugendra is the son of Ajit Pawar's younger brother, Shrinivas Pawar.
Baramati was also a high-profile constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Sunetra Pawar contested against Supriya Sule. The latter emerged victorious, winning by a margin of nearly 1.5 lakh votes.
The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with votes for all 288 constituencies to be counted on November 23.
In the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena secured 56, and Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP won 122 seats, Shiv Sena 63, and Congress 42. (ANI)
