New Delhi [India], January 20 (ANI): West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday underlined Nitin Nabin's political maturity and long organisational experience as the latter formally assumed charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to ANI, Bhattacharya said the people of West Bengal had made up their minds about the party's future direction and leadership. "Nitin Nabin is a mature politician and has been in politics for a long time," he remarked, projecting confidence in Nabin's ability to steer the party at the national level.
Nitin Nabin took charge as the BJP national president at a ceremony held at the party headquarters in the national capital earlier in the day. The event was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, outgoing BJP national president JP Nadda, senior party leaders, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, reflecting the significance of the leadership transition.
A senior leader from Bihar, Nabin, is a five-time member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and a former minister in the state government. He is widely regarded within the party for his organisational skills and administrative experience, attributes that the BJP leadership has highlighted as crucial in the coming political phase.
The election process for the BJP's national president began after the party completed the election of 30 out of its 36 state presidents, crossing the mandatory 50 per cent threshold. The election schedule was announced on January 16, 2026, along with the release of the electoral roll. As per the schedule, nominations were filed on January 19 between 2 pm and 4 pm.
According to party sources, 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted in favour of Nabin. His candidature was proposed by several senior leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Prime Minister Modi, while congratulating Nabin, emphasised the collective nature of party leadership. Addressing a gathering at the BJP headquarters, he said that when it comes to the party, Nitin Nabin is the "boss" and that he himself is a mere party worker.
PM Modi added that Nabin's responsibility extends beyond managing the BJP to ensuring coordination among National Democratic Alliance allies. (ANI)
