NDRF teams clearing fallen trees, ready for requisite action well in time: Director General

Pachnanda on Monday said after it was reported that some tress and electric poles have fallen, NDRF teams swung into action and clearing fallen trees.

New Delhi/Chennai [India], Dec. 12 (ANI): Stating that the landfall was at Pulicat (Pazhaverkadu) and there had been squally rains since then, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Director General R.K. Pachnanda on Monday said after it was reported that some tress and electric poles have fallen, NDRF teams swung into action and clearing fallen trees. "The landfall was at Pulicat (Pazhaverkadu) and there are squally rains right now. It is reported that some tress and electric poles have fallen. NDRF teams have begun their operations in clearing theses trees," said Pachnanda. Though there are not too many trees that have fallen but as they are falling, NDRF teams are taking actions, he said. Divulging details of NDRF teams' positioning, he said, "There are 16 teams, which were pre-positioned well in time; eight each in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu so that they could take requisite action well in time." "In AP, teams were pre-positioned in Nellore, Sullurpeta, Ongole in Prakasam and Chittoor districts; whereas in Tamil Nadu, three teams were pre-positioned in Chennai, two each in Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts and one was pre-positioned at Puducherry," said Pachnanda. "Besides, we have stand-by teams in reserve at Arakkonam, near Chennai, Guntur, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, and we have a regional response centre in Bengaluru," he said. At least two people died on Monday after Cyclone 'Vardah' pounded Tamil Nadu, reported the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The NDMA further said at least 24 huts were damaged and around 8,008 people were accommodated in 95 relief camps. Many trees were uprooted and vehicles got damaged after Cyclone Vardah made a landfall at Pulicat (Pazhaverkadu) lashing the coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. (ANI)
