Navy conducts half marathon to celebrate Navy Week in Mumbai
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Nov. 14 (ANI): The Indian Navy launched its first half marathon in Mumbai over the weekend. The event was organised as part of the Navy Week celebrations that would culminate on December 4. The marathon was conducted in three categories - the Aircraft Carrier Run (21 kilometres/13 miles), the Destroyer Run (10 kilometres/6.2 miles) and the Frigate Run (5 kilometres/3.1 miles). Hundreds gathered near the Mumbai Cricket Association Ground early morning, from where the races were flagged off by Vice Admiral Ravneet Singh, Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command. "This is an opportunity for all citizens to come together with the Indian Navy and run with them and to encourage them. The navy and other armed forces put a lot of emphasis upon physical fitness, and we feel that if we can give something to the society, it is the culture of physical fitness. That is today's initiative," said Commander Rahul Sinha, chief public relations officer of the defence ministry on Sunday. The winners were felicitated with cash prizes and novelty nautical artifacts, including telescopes, sextants and diving helmets. (ANI)
