National Handloom Day: PM Modi urges nation to give impetus to handloom sector
New Delhi, Aug. 7 (ANI): On the occasion of 'National Handloom Day', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the nation to give an impetus to the handloom sector and use more of the product in daily lives. "On #NationalHandloomDay, let us affirm that we will give an impetus to the handloom sector & use more handloom products in our daily lives," Prime Minister Modi tweeted. He said the handloom sector is diverse, eco-friendly and is a source of employment for countless weavers, who will be very encouraged by the support. Prime Minister Modi also posted a video on his Twitter handle of his speech on the handloom sector and Khadi at the Townhall programme yesterday. He said that if after agriculture, there is any sector which can create and employ poor people, then these are textile, handloom, khadi, weaving and termed these as their biggest strength. The Prime Minister described 'Khadi for Nation, Khadi for Fashion' as one of the principles that could serve as a guide for the people. His comments came in the wake of second 'National Handloom Day' which is being celebrated today. "Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani will be the chief guest in the main function which will be held in Varanasi," the ministry said in a statement. It further said that the National Handloom Day, which was first celebrated in 2015, will be celebrated at state level in all states and in 200 different handloom clusters. To mark the Swadeshi Movement which began on August 7, 1905 and with the objective to generate awareness about the importance of handloom industry and its contribution to the socioeconomic development, the government on July 29, 2015 declared this day as 'National Handloom Day'.
