Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 4 (ANI): Ahead of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain on Monday expressed confidence that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will easily form the government in the state and the alliance would secure a good number of seats.
Speaking to ANI, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said, "We distributed seats through a very detailed discussion with other parties based on winnability, cadre strength, organisational strength and sitting MLAs in the last elections. The parties have fielded candidates through proper screening. I think no party has this feeling that someone is contesting for more seats and someone is contesting for fewer seats. I think there has been a fair distribution of tickets and seats. I think MVA will form the government here very easily and we will win a good number of seats."
He welcomed the Election Commission's (EC) decision to transfer Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Shukla after acting on the complaints from the Indian National Congress (INC) and other parties. Hussain emphasised that no police official or bureaucrat should be pro-government or pro-party, asserting the need for independent and impartial work from such officials.
Hussain said, "Better late than never. The Election Commission has taken action. We had made demands in line with the action they took in Jharkhand. No Police official or bureaucrat should be pro-government or pro-party. They should work independently, and impartially. This was not just our demand."
He further added that everyone was aware of what was happening.
"But I think she has already done a lot of damage due to this delayed decision. When such demands come from Opposition parties, the EC should make all efforts to take action so that there is a level playing field," he added.
Acting on the complaints from Congress and other parties, the Election Commission has ordered the transfer of Rashmi Shukla, DGP Maharashtra with immediate effect and directed the Maharashtra Chief Secretary to hand over her responsibilities to the next senior-most IPS officer in the cadre.
Additionally, the Chief Secretary has been instructed to submit a panel of three IPS officers for the appointment of the new DGP by 1 PM on November 5, 2024, according to sources.
The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with counting for all 288 constituencies set for November 23 and November 4 being the last day for withdrawing nominations.
In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena secured 56, and the Congress claimed 44. In 2014, the BJP won 122 seats, the Shiv Sena 63, and the Congress 42. (ANI)
