Paschim Bardhaman (West Bengal) [India], May 22 (ANI): Attacking West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her recent comments related to some monks of the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Home Minister Amit Shah has said she wants to "appease Muslim voters by defaming" these organisations.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, Amit Shah said Ramakrishna Mission works to provide healthcare, education, and water supply among other services in the remote areas of North-East India.
"I strongly condemn this comment made by Mamata Banerjee. Bharat Sevashram Sangh is an organisation because of which West Bengal is a part of India. Mamata Banerjee probably does not know if BSS founder Swami Pranavananda was not there, West Bengal would have been a part of Bangladesh and not India," he said.
"Mamata Banerjee wants to appease Muslim voters by defaming organisations like Bharat Sewashram Sangh, ISKCON, and Ramakrishna Mission," he added.
Amit Shah accused Trinamool Congress leader of appeasement politics and said that reputation of these institutions is being sought to be damaged for the purpose of winning elections.
"I condemn this. In the remote areas of North-East India, Ramakrishna Mission works to provide healthcare, education, and water supply among other services."
He said there are reports of police going to the ashram. "BJP will protest this".
He urged people to be cautious if Mamata Banerjee makes allegations "against these reputed organisations for vote bank".
Mamata Banerjee had earlier alleged that some monks of the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha were working under the influence of BJP leaders in Delhi.
A monk of Bharat Sevashram Sangha had sent a legal notice to Banerjee over her comments.
The Trinamool Congress chief later clarified that her remarks pertained to certain individual monks and were not against any institution.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Police has arrested five people in connection with the vandalization of properties at Ramakrishna Mission in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dipak Sarkar told ANI that the five people arrested on Tuesday in connection with the vandalization and were identified as Shambhu Das, Debashish Sarkar, Shambhu Mahato, Samuel Baidya and Rajiv.
"Ramakrishna Mission stated that some hooligans led by Pradeep Roy attacked the Ramakrishna Mission ashram at Sevoke Road, and they threatened and snatched some articles like mobiles and others and damaged the CCTV of the premises and after damaging them, they left the place," DCP Sarkar said.
"During the investigation, the police found a pending civil case regarding this land. There is a land dispute case and the main accused, as per the complaint Pradeep Roy, made a civil suit in court that this property belongs to him as per the Hindu succession act and he got status quo on this land," he said.
The official said that security measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incident. (ANI)
