Mamata Banerjee tried to suppress truth, destroy evidence and save rapist: Shahzad Poonawala after SC hearing on Kolkata rape-murder case

New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): BJP leader Shahzad Poonawala hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata and alleged that the state government tried to suppress the truth, destroy evidence and save the rapist.
Shahzad Poonawala said, "The hearing that took place in the Supreme Court today makes one thing clear that instead of getting justice for the daughter, Mamata Banerjee's government was trying to suppress the truth, destroy evidence and save the rapist. It came to the fore in the Supreme Court that how in an organised way there was an attempt to cover up the case. This case was first given the form of suicide, the family was not given the body, they were made to wait for hours."
He further said that there was a delay in the registration of FIR and parents were not provided any aid.
"The state government's role was to promote the Principal and carry out construction to wipe out the evidence. 5000 goons enter the college and the police there are unable to do anything. This same question was asked by the HC and the victim's parents. The question arises whether Mamata Banerjee will take responsibility and resign or use police force to muzzle the voice," he added.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday constituted a 10-member National Task Force to make recommendations on the prevention of violence and safe working conditions for medical professionals.
The task force includes Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin among others.
Days after the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata sparked nationwide protests, the apex court suo motu took up the case and directed the task force to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
The court said the Task Force would also prepare an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified working space for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors.
The top court also asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report on the status of the investigation in the rape case. The court asked the West Bengal government to file a status report on the mob attack incident in the RG Kar hospital on August 15.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which has led to nationwide strikes. Civil societies and doctors across the States protested against the incident, demanded severe punishment for the accused, and sought safety and security for themselves. (ANI)
